Converse Grange #1528

The Converse Grange was organized in 1938, and has played a vital part in the Converse Community ever since. Their first task was to bring electricity to farm homes. The Bexar County Commissioners refused to allow electricity to be installed in rural areas. When the Federal Government created the Rural Electrification Administration, the Converse Grange joined the Cost, Tx. Grange in order for both to qualify for government assistance. When a new sewer system was needed in Converse, the Grange started a corporation and sold 3,000 shares at $200 a share. The corporation was soon approved by the state. The Converse sewer project earned national recognition, winning third place in the Sears & Roebuck Community service contest. The Grange also donated $3,000 to the Converse Volunteer Fire Department for a new fire truck. When the City received a Texas Parks and Wildlife grant for tree planting downtown, the Grange helped plant them. The Grange also donated $5,000 for the Converse Area Public Library. During 1995 through 1997 the Grange has been awarded first place in the State Community Service contest.
